We’re live from Mobilize 2009 to see Sanjay Jha’s hail mary Android launch. Will Moto pull a rabbit out of the smartphone hat? We’ll find out!

Update order: Newest first | Oldest first

Manual updating, hit F5!

4:12PM - Looks like we’re all done here. Be sure to check our Motorola Cliq (Dext) page!

4:11PM - Om: “How would you guys improve the iPhone?”

Jha: “It’s a very good question I haven’t given a wit of thought to.” Laughter. “Over the last year I’ve been preoccupied…” Discussing deep app integration on the home screen.

Om: “What will the mobile internet look like in 2011?”

Jha: “Context awareness is a very important factor. Trust will be an important factor. Healthcare and fitness is going to be important. Multimedia — there’s no rationale for 4G without multimedia.”

Rubin: “Moving the web forward as a platform. Things like HTML5 — reaching into the cellphone, probably by 2013 you’ll see the web as a platform not unlike an OS today.”

4:06PM - Jha: “One of our competitive advantages is that we do hardware and software — we need to solve problems that make life easier.”

4:03PM - They’re chatting about the Google / Motorola partnership. Om: “What happens to the other platforms? Seems like most of the large handset makers are backing Android now…”

Rubin: “It’s about choice, it’s down to the fundamentals and let the best product win.”

Om: “What about Palm, do they stand a chance to stick around?”

Jha: Laughs. “I’m a little preoccupied with myself here right now!”

4:00PM - Om: “What’s Google’s interest in doing Android?”

Rubin: “Well, simply, what’s good for the internet is what’s good for Google. If it benefits the internet, it benefits Google’s core business, which is advertising.”

3:58PM - Om: “What is a smartphone? There is the ’superphone’ which Apple makes, but what do you call a smartphone?”

Jha: “The definition from analyst to analyst changes dramatically. But I think if you don’t have a good, rich browser, I don’t think that meets the definition of a smartphone. Messaging is very important…”

3:54PM - Fireside chat time Jha with Andy Rubin (of Android) and Om.

3:53PM - “You can customize and create a mobile experience that’s right for you. We’re taking Motoblur global and we’ll be introducing many more devices featuring this solution in 2010. We really believe Motoblur will become a differentiator for us. But not only are we taking it global, we’re taking this device worldwide, calling it the Dext.” It’ll be hitting Orange in the UK and France (among other countries).

3:51PM - It’s got 3G + WiFi, 5 megapixel autofocus camera, 24fps video recording, 3.5mm headphone jack, HTML browser (Android’s browser, natch), turn-by-turn directions, and all the rest of what comes along with Android.

3:50PM - “I want to thank Sanjay again for having T-Mobile be a part of Motorola’s big introduction.” Sanjay: “We could not have done this without T-Mobile, they’ve been a great supporter of this launch and over the last few years. There are a few more things I’d like to share about this device.”

3:49PM - Cole’s still going on about their customers and such. It’ll be available in Q4. “It’ll join our most innovative lineup ever, with a strong emphasis on Android.” It’ll be coming in white and titanium colors. “We expect it’ll be one of our hottest selling devices.”

3:47PM - Cole: “Over the last two years, our internet traffic has increased 10x. … we’ve invested over $9 billion on a modern 3G network, so it’s a great time for us to be introducing a product like this.”

3:46PM - Cole: “The Cliq and Motoblur is a new start for Android. … I think it’s a great new example of what’s going to happen with Android.”

3:45PM - The Motorola Cliq! “The first phone with social skills.”

3:45PM - “Oh, I have a call coming — it’s Cole Brodman.” (CTO of T-Mobile)

3:44PM - Has remote wipe and GPS-based location in case you lose your device, á la MobileMe. Starting to notice a trend here?

3:42PM - Contacts from a variety of sites and services are synced to a single address book, kind of like Palm’s Synergy. Updates get pushed directly to the device.

3:40PM - Custom home screens and widgets, kind of like HTC’s Sense Android. “One update broadcasts everywhere in seconds — nothing could be much easier than this.” This front-end isn’t actually too shabby, but it’s all video style demos, I want to see this running on real hardware.

3:39PM - Oh, sorry, it’s “MOTOBLUR” — OTA sync and backups, constantly updating lifestream. “It syncs contacts, posts, feeds, messages, emails, photos, and more from Facebook, Gmail, MySpace… integrated deep into the corners of the device.”

3:37PM - “What if there was a solution to solve all this complexity and made it easier to stay connected to family and friends? What if you could carry it with you at all times? We have a unique solution… we call it Moto Blur.” Demo video.

3:35PM - “In a few minutes I’ll be sharing a new, differentiated smartphone. In the coming weeks we’ll share a second device that is an equally impressive experience but will be available for the holiday season. But first, let’s look at social networking…” groan. Get to the phone!

3:34PM - “We were one of the original members in the OHA, and put meaningful resources into Android.” Yep, yep, yep, get to the phone.

3:33PM - What’s a smartphone have, according to Jha? Large, high res display, 3G or 4G, HTML browser, OTA software updates, media capabilities, good voice quality, and multi-tasking GUI. “The Android platform gives us an opportunity to deliver on this… it also allows for competitive differentiation.”

3:32PM - “Mobilizing the internet in maturing markets may present the single biggest opportunity in technology today.” Yeah, I’d say so. “Smartphones are the backbone of how this will occur. … everyone has a different definition of ’smartphone.’”

3:30PM - Jha’s rattling off a ton of numbers about wireless broadband penetration and growth — nothing much you don’t already know. It’s big. It’s getting bigger, and fast. Get to Android!

3:29PM - Dr. Sanjay Jha, co-CEO of Motorola Mobile Devices is up on stage. “I’m excited to be here today and I’d like to thank everyone at GigaOM for hosting us today.” Jha’s talking about the “near-ubiquitous availability of wireless broadband.”

3:27PM - Kevin Tofel from jkOnTheRun is about to get us started.

3:21PM - We’ll be getting started in just a few.
